Why are so many people 'vocal' about fire extinguishers?

Having spent some time now using this forum I have noticed that a significant number of the longer threads relate to fire extinguishers. They discuss their principle purpose, siting them, inspecting them - just about every aspect possible. In fact if you want a long thread - talk about extinghisters. Why is that?
(I know fire is a very serious issue. I know extinguishers are very important. I am NOT belittling that. But they do initiate a lot of debate, I only what to know why)

I think the main reason is the pro/against installing extinguishers in communal areas and the OTT extinguishers you get in some workplaces.
Some people are worried to move away from prescriptive advice for example extinguishers every 30 meters, water extinguisher on each landing/per 200m2.
I did a residential property portfolio a while back where there was a water extinguisher located by the main entrance Hallway???
The common areas of most of these properties was 200-500m2 so someone thought they must have least x 1 extinguisher.
BUT in the event of fire, you make your way all the way to the front door and a step away from total safety and you have an extinguisher there to go back into the property.makes sense???I don't think so.
I also recently did an office block where ABC powder extinguishers were located in common and office areas???????? that extinguisher company are making a few extra quid...
You also have the issue of practical training where you have extinguishers so persons are familiar with the use and what type to use.
I let others carry on...............

Because, for most situations, they are a tangible, touchable part of a low prob, high consequence scenario.
Plenty of room for different interpretations on the actual risk and the best risk controls there then, especially if you use simplistic risk assessment techniques?
Smell the smoke, ring the bell; past the extinguisher you run like hell?
See the flame, smell the smoke; put it out, what a bloke!
Now that is a choice that has extinguished all hope on this forum and is responsible for many a long thread!

Probably because the other safety subjects are too hard for us!!
I like the one that asks about 'legislation of cleaning dirty windows'!
Mind you the dangerous hobbies got a good response.

Why ask that question? Or do you just want a long thread?

it's probably because it's a topic everyone gets involved in, most other topics can be quite specialist with only a few people having sensible opinions but everyone can comment on fire extinguishers.

I think the main reason for long threads is that "one size fits all" does not apply to fire extinguishers but that many posters think with blindfolds and assume all premises are like their own so "one size does fit all"!
