Guys,
has anyone got 'rules /guidelines' written for when to use goggles or a face shield rather than standard safety glasses.

We have had three chemical splashes which have either entered the eye or nearly entered the eye, so I want to write a policy as to when safety goggles should be worn.

Currently I am thinking :-
1. if you are handling materials with risk phrases of R14, R34, R35 and R41
2. If the MSDS states that you should wear them
3. if you are doing work above atmospheric pressure
4. If there is a significant chance of a splash.

I would welcome any feedback - is the above reasonable?
Does anyone have any policies /procedures in place already which they are willing to share.
Thanks
Helen

Hi Helen,

I recently had a thread about a similar issue and was directed to the following link

It did come in handy !

I'd take out number 2 - partly because msds often overstate PPE requirements, partly because it would be a pain to look up the msds each time so wouldn't happen, and partly because it is up to the employer to specify when goggles should be used and this sounds like passing on the responsibility. Basing it on risk phrases is a good start particularly if these are written on the containers (are they?)

Helen,

In my workplace, our rule is, when working with chemicals you must wear your safety goggles.

I agree with Coshh....

The supplier who writes the msds has no idea as to what the chemical is being used for and will cover all his/her bases regardless of how it will be handled by the user.

I did a big project on this on a Chemical plant. It's not as easy as you think for some situations. It all depends on circumstances.

Main problem was wearing goggles for 12 hour shifts was not practicable.
However specs not rated against dust hazards!

We enforced safety specs at all times - with goggles carried on person.

Goggles had to be worn when carrying out high risk tasks, when looking up and as per specific risk assessments,

Bolle and Sperian were both fantastic resources - I have a presentation I can share email me if you want it.

I would think face protection would be better to keep chemicals off your face?
