Posted By Tony abc jprhdnMurphy I have been asked to complete RA's for our environmental impact. This is impossible because I do not know, or have a clear path to what harm may be caused. I have definately no idea whatsoever of the likelihood. I am not a competent person when it comes to this subject and I know that my RA will be insufficient and unsuitable. How have others managed to combat this.

Posted By Tabs I did some of this stuff during my degree (12 years hence), but only yesterday I pointed out to my new employer that they would need to send me on a lot of training to make any sensible and worthwhile input. We can all use the fashionable words, but as you say it won't really mean much at all. Test their sincerity - if they want a policy and RA for the sake of it, so be it. If they really want to know, they should be open to appointing a competent company or training you.

Posted By DavidW There is a growing tendancy to put Environment and H&S in the same job basket. While there are many similarities there are also many differences and specialist knowledge really is required if the assessments are to be meaningfull and effective. I teach a number of Environmental courses and frequently find people are attending because they have been put in the same position as you. Having been doing this for over 12 years in one form or another I'm still learning but happy to provide help to others where possible. David

Posted By DPK Tony I will keep this as brief and to the point as possible. 1) carry out a site inspection and identify the aspects of your business (use of energy, chemicals, raw materials, transport use, stored substances, car parking etc) 2) establish the volume of use and quantities of these aspects and record those findings. 3) consider the location of your site and how the local, national and global environment could/would be affected if you continue to use the aspects identified or if you have an incident with one of the aspects e.g. oil spill. 4) once this is completed assess the risk associated with the aspects multiplied by the likelihood by the severity as you would with a H&S RA. This will give you your Environmental Assessment of your site and work activities. I know i have simplified it but this is generally what the assessment process is.If you would like more info then we can have a chat, don't worry I'm not selling. DPK

Posted By Peter F Tony, enhance your CV by asking for training in environmental management. If they refuse find out the cost of bringing someone in and then ask again.
