Posted By Fred Pratley When the enforced ban was brought in, the non-smokers were very vigilant about the whole thing and made sure that no-one lit up on the way out or near doorways. As a result, smokers here are very good and keep away from openings (so they tend to be forgiven when its lashing down with rain), but there is always someone looking for any excuse not to abide by accepted practises. Now I have just been shown one of these new electronic cigarettes by someone trying to quit and he wants to use it indoors. The information leaflet says there is a perceptible odour "which quickly dissipates". Obviously I want to support him to give up, so has anyone come across these e cigarettes and what has been your experience? Thanks Fred

Posted By Wil The typical electronic cigarette is made of stainless steel, has a liquid nicotine refill cartridge, is powered by a rechargeable battery and resembles a real cigarette. People inhale from it like a real cigarette, where it produces a fine heated mist, without any smoke. According to the World Health Organisation there is "no scientific evidence to confirm the product's safety and efficacy." E-cigarettes that have been tested to date had nicotine at more than 7% in solution and therefore are legally required to display highly toxic product warnings. As such I would say that the ball is still in play on this one until specific guidance can be found. As an interim measure HR can always produce a policy?

Posted By Andy Petrie The odour is added and you can get odour free ones if it's bothering people.
