Do you think it's of any value to purchase grip gloves for a team of people who move a photocopying machine every so often - maybe once or twice a year. The task has been allocated to an outside contractor - who incidentally use these gloves - they do it more often and on a large scale. Our guys don't see the need, since they do the task only in emergency situations. I can see the benefit of the gloves, but don't want to ram ppe just cuz I can. The copiers are large and need 4 people to move at a time.
I am hopeful for a positive response!

Well your risk assessment will naturally be based partly on likelihood vs severity.. if, even only moved a couple of times a year there is strong likelihood of fairly notable accident then why not? they only have to wear them a couple of times a year!
Even though i can see the bigger problem being manual handling - can a large trolley be used as opposed to numerous people therefore reducing if not eliminating the hazard in the first place?
Even for 1 small job we all have a responsibility for health & safety.

Many thanks, those were my thoughts; I just want to be sure that I get the balance right - the more I traverse the safety road the more I learn! Your useful advice is appreciated. I have taken the MH risk into account - I am looking to procure a pallet truck or something along those lines - it would have to be slim to account for width of lift, doors etc in relation to width of machine. In the interim, I have to set something up until these long term changes can be made. Credit crunch and all - it will be a while before i can procure anything - if I am still in this role having just started! PS. the printer is on wheels so easy to manoeuvre - the reason for 4 movers is to ensure steering, direction accounted for etc

Re pallet truck or similar. I once worked in an office where we moved equipment using four units which looked a bit like miniature tank trucks. These were placed underneath the equipment and allowed it to be wheeled easily. Since they fitted the equipment size for doorways etc. was not a problem.
I cannot remember at the moment where they came from, but I will take a look this evening and see if I can locate them.

IMHO a "no" on the gloves requirement. I do admit to being curious about the 'emergency' circumstances whsich would require your own people to move the machine though?

Lol Ron - never an 'emergency,' but in my industry (private sector) not having a photocopy machine 2 seconds away from you is considered an interruption and business critical. It just usually means the engineers can't get a new machine to us that day.
Sometimes I loose all sense of reality. Not sure if you work in the public or private sector, but you would laugh at the 'emergency' situations!
Lets just say I work with those that got us in this 'crunch' of a situation - they get what they want when they want it regardless of what will be proposed and reported.........I just do my best to protect those that have to carry out the services.
Anyhoo, all in a days work............
