Hi all - I am no expert on this subject - please help!

An employee has recently had a face piercing and they handle basic food (make toast, serve customers, etc).

The company do not have a written policy, but recognise that the piercing may weep, etc.

Is there specific legislation on staff and jewellery / piercings, etc?

I have looked through the Food Hygiene Scotland Regs 2006, but cannot find anything to relate to this.

Please help if yoiu can. Thanks, B

Brian,

You say recent... Until the wound is completely healed with no sign of post piercing infection, after that I expect it would have a minimal effect in regards to hygiene, although not an expert in this field...

Although it would also be prudent for the employer to revisit their hygiene policy in regards to this and also with regards to ensuring employees take appropriate hygiene measures after touching... same as touching face, nose, mouth etc.

Likely to be a more practical approach in a food prep/serving area?

Brian,

There isn’t any piece of legislation as such. It has to be your own policy. However, good practices prohibit the use of any type of unwanted clothing and jewellery to the food handling areas(accept a simple wedding ring, electro magnetic bungles etc) .

Any such items are classified as foreign bodies and can create risk of contamination and other hygiene issues.
