Posted By Andy Petrie I was chatting to someone yesterday who had been served a notice due to the lack of any fixed guarding rouns a mini pilling rig thety were using. Apparently there has been legislation on this since 2000, however no one I have spoken too knows anything about it (including come HSE Inspectors). Has any one heard of thsi legislation and had experience with its implimentation.

Posted By sarahsnelling Hi Andy, the relevant legislation is Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, Reg 11. Basically, access to the rotating part of the rig must be prevented where practicable; this is usually expected to be achieved through the use of interlocked guards.

Posted By Delwynne Andy As Sarah says above it's all to do with Puwer. Interlocked guards on piling rigs have in the past been viewed as not practicable and the use of trip wires and exclusion zones was accepted however as things always do, technology has moved on and in most situations interlocked guards can work very effectively with smaller machines. If you need any more specific information please feel free to drop me an email and I'll see if I can help.

Posted By Andy Petrie Thanks, I was after specicfic guidance which had been produced by the British Drilling Association which we have now got, see updare from HSE: In August 2000 the British Drilling Association (BDA) developed & published a guidance document highlighting this risk & explaining the measures that must be taken to comply with current safety legislation. This was produced in consultation with industry & the HSE; copies of “Guidance Notes for the Protection of Persons from Rotating Parts & Ejected or Falling Material Involved in the Drilling Process” can be supplied by the BDA.
