Hi all,
I am trying to find a fun training game to include within my H&S induction training programme. I am thinking for something straight after lunch to wake my group up. Some kind of group game would be ideal. Does anybody have any ideas or samples of such items that I could use? By the way the training is in the UAE and the candidates are a mixture of nationalities so it needs to be quite basic.
Thanks & regards
Paul

How is this played Raymond, I only know the Russian roulette with the gun. Not sure where this would sit in terms of employee welfare!!!

Hi, on the training courses we run, straight after lunch,we get everyone to stand round in a circle and throw a ball to someone in the room, until everyone has touched the ball, you are not allowed to pass it to the person either side of you. After this is complete we ask them to start again throwing the ball in the same sequence around the circle. It's a bit of fun and it seems to wake people up!

Interesting idea about throwing a ball around but what is this meant to achieve in relation to health and safety induction training?

Like the idea of the ball... a bit of variation before getting back to the nitty gritty!

it brings people "back into the room" always hard after a lunch break, its a bit different and totally unexpected, nothing to do with H&S.

We also hand out "Partner cards" i.e POSH AND BECKS-CHALK AND CHEESE-LAUREL AND HARDY etc.On the back of each card is 6 questions to ask your PARTNER. i.e. have you ever been in an accident, have you ever been to hopsital, pizza or pasta etc.
These cards are shuffled up and handed out,you then find your partner and ask the questions on the card-good ice breaker

If you use two balls and have everyone in a circle, then ask them to pass the balls around as quickly as possible - then ask them to come up with an idea, as a team to do the task faster and more efficiently, this then become as communication, mentoring and team work excercise - it's very some of the solutions people come up with.

Sorry Paul, it was just an inspirational comment but did seem to 'fit in' with your precis.
On a more serious note, it is not something I have readily experienced. However, I have found that case studies can be an interesting form of discussion and learning. Could be a real life incident or you could embellish it for some humour. I was once involved in a group case study and keeping it light hearted it was one of the most hilarious exercises I can remember - a good 'ice breaker'.

There is a site called Trainer bubble that has lots of games on, not necessarily health and safety but they get people going

I start the afternoon session with Manual Handling (office environment) so cover the very basics of anatomy by passing round a mini spine before getting three participants to stand before 3 identical boxes (all marked up with different weights). Ask them to lift the box at the same time then pass them round to discuss how they lifted, what their impressions were etc [and how even if the weight is written on the box, it might not be the same].
Later on, look at group handling so do the "person in chair" 4 person lift to show how communication is required...usually gets a laugh and wakes everyone up!
End the afternoon session looking briefly at stress and show my stress buster.....a photo of my dog which always raises a few "ahhs" and everyone goes away smiling!!

We've tried a trust exercise which was well received. Depending on your workplace fill a bowl of water, blindfold the person carrying it and place some objects that are in your everyday workplace in the walking route. They then have to rely on the person directing them to walk them through safely which in turn will keep them dry !!
Bit of fun and sure wakes them up if they get it wrong !
