I am looking for some information from anyone who has as part of their remit health and safety responsibilities for workers in the anti social behaviour areas.
I have been asked for my view on the requirement/ suitability of the many ranges of stab or slash proof clothing available and no pun intended I am a bit torn!
Whereas I can see the argument of providing the best available equipment to our team, there appears to be no recorded incidents of assaults of this nature. Now is that good luck or good practice and should it persuade or arguments either for or against new equipment.
I am also slightly concerned of the possible 'robo cop' mentality that this equipment may give our staff albeit training is provided and would continue to be.
Long winded question I know but what is everyone else doing who works in this field?

I have previously had some input for front-line uniformed staff who interface with the public. They are at greater risk than most other workers. However, I do not recall any interventions being discussed such as armoured vests or any other 'stab proof' clothing. There will certainly be some pros and cons with this type of PPE.
Without more information on the type of environment your staff work in and/or the risks they face it is difficult to be more precise.

The team respond to complaints of anti social behaviour within the local authority area.
The role involves meeting complainers, speaking to alleged sources of disorder and monitoring of any orders etc.

We have wardens who patrol within various neighbourhoods - some of them potentially violent and criminalised. However, we don't issue them with stab vests etc on the advice of the Police. We give them thorough training and feel that by making them look too authoritative, they are being singled out as targets. We have had many incidents where Police have been involved and ASBOS have been issued, so we do have experience in this field. Antistab vests are fine for the Police and similar, but I don't think they are for people patrolling the streets.

hi, la dept with anti social task force.. had request from manager re these. my/safety section view should be issued. Why.. staff should be trained and experienced enough not to out them selves at that level of risk..be able to withdraw from higher risk scenarios..get police to go with them for certain high risk activities..e.g. eviction.. mostly you/they will know high risk tenants etc. from other information from their records, other dept records (e.g. social work), police etc. who have most likely had some contact with such individuals..thus key is planning, risk assessment etc. before you/they go out.. No it won't protect anyone from random attacks..but that can happen to anyone anytime..not just at work..indeed generally we will be much more at risk in the community on a fri sat night down the pub.. key, i know repeating myself..is risk assessment and planning..additionally some staff wearing such devices may become cocky and put them selves at risk instead of withdrawing.

You may also look at specific training in handling aggressive behaviours if you haven't done so already.
