Posted By GavinR Hi,
We have purchased a new pneumatic die grinder and the actual noise readings are at approx 95dB(A) when ran without grinding and just over 100 dB(A) when grinding. This is second the die grinder we have sourced from the manufacturer as the original die grinder operated at a similar level. The info provided by the manufacturer/supplier states the equipt will be approx 78dB(A)but this certainly not the case. I have looked on HSE Noise website and in some sales catalogues for noise reduction measures for this type of equipment but could not see anything suitable. At present operators must wear ear protection during the use of the tool which is approx 30 times for maximum of 1 minute over an 8 hour shift. Any pointers to suitable controls or engineering practices would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Posted By garyh What would be critical is the distance at which the noise levels were measured. The closer, the higher the number.

Posted By GavinR They were measured at the operators head level. Only short term measurement but enough to get a snap shot.

Posted By Bill Parkinson You will need to check what the operator is doing in between using this equipment to determine the actual noise dose as this is what the standards are measured at. This means following them for a period using a logging dose meter to get a more accurate picture. You are looking at mandatory noise protection zones anyway due to the high noise level but if they are working in noisy areas during their shift then you could be looking at moulded hearing protection. This are ear plugs but are moulded to fir the individuals ear and can attain a high attenuation factor.
The other possible alternative is dependant on how the equipment is used (i.e. could it be mounted in an acoutic enclosure and the work piece held upto the grinder). I would also contact the supplier to ask how they arrived at the noise level they quoted as there is a significant difference.
Hope that helps.
Bill
