Posted By Aidan Cuttell I am trying to implement best practice by implementing documented daily check for work equipment within a heavy manufacturing site, rather than visual checks as stated in PUWER - I am meeting some resistance as they think it is one step too far. The equipment is used constantly and can be dangerous if damaged or misused, different opinions would be appreciated if it appears that it is one step to far. Keith

Posted By Kate Gibb Aidan, I would base it on risk - a bit of a cop out answer, but if you think the operation and condition of the machinery has a significant impact on its safety, then implement the check sheets. One would expect similar for a forklift truck - daily check sheets (RTITB have good examples for these). Another question, if people on your site think this are over the top, does this mean they are unlikely to do the checks - it's very easy to tick a box to say a check has been done when it hasn't. If the culture on site means that people will do the checks properly, then maybe just a sign sheet to say the checks have been done is appropriate (linked to a procedure which explains fully how to do the checks). Anyway, hope this helps a little. I too would be interested to hear other points of view! Kate

Posted By laugar Adrian Why don’t you try reverse sociology and explain that the daily check sheets are to protect them just as much as it is to protect the company and if for some reason the machine fails they can demonstrate they have checked it (as per training), call it daily pre start checks as most if not all of any training on plant requires pre start checks to be competed

Posted By Keith C Thanks, PUWER only states checks at suitable intervals. It has been explained to the relevant mangers about the importance of documented checks, especially in a heavy manufacturing plant but it is the same in most areas that "we haven't done it, so why change". Second opinions are always appreciated.

Posted By Zorro Aidan, the problem with inspection sheets, is they can become tick sheets and no-one is really checking. We have stop button checks to be carried out every day but unless I am there I wouldn't know when they are carried out. If daily visual checks are being carried out then is it possible to name the persons who will carry it out each day and then have a written weekly check.

Posted By Bob Youel If ever you need evidence in court document evidence [monitoring / check sheets] become invaluable - a visual only situation without written evidence is only worth the paper that it is written on Change is seen by many to be to much bother so noting that we should not lose site of common sense start by hitting only high risk areas first

Posted By Bill01 Have to agree with Bob Y, it falls under due diligance and demonstrates that for high risk equipment the appropriate critical checks are carried out before use or on a routine basis.

Posted By Swis It will depepend upon a suitable and suffcient assessment. If the risk is lower compared to costs/time than YES, it is over the top.
