If an underground fuel tank is being drained as they are no longer required, does anyone know what extra precautions need to be put in place one it has bee de commissioned, I'm assumming it will have to be vented to prevent residue gases building up, but would it have to be filled in with sand or something similar, any one know of any guidance on this?

If you are able to get access to BS:6187 ‘Code of practice for demolition’, you will find that much of the information you require is written within this document.

What does the company you are using say?

They normally get infilled with a substance agreed by local fire officers, air pressure tested which only lasts for 24hrs and of course completed drained down and disconnected in advance.

There needs to be a specific risk assessment and method statement for this task.

fill with aeriated concrete, but you must be sure that there are no residues which may later leak through and contaminate groundwater...it also depends on what you are doing with the site in future...try your local environment agency and planning offices...the above adice was given when we decommissioned an underground parrafin tank

The tank must have the "bottoms" removed - i.e. the fuel lying below the bottom level of the siphon tube. It should then be steam cleaned (and gas free certificate issued)immediately before infill with concrete slurry or specialist foam product.
Foam is ideal as the tank can be readily removed and cut up in situ at some later date.
