Our site has a schedule for regular inspection of our own ladders.
I have been asked whether it is a requirement for all ladders to be inspected and tagged on our site (ie. Contractors).
I am sure the answer is no, we don't need to. We have a duty to provide safe plant and equipment for our employees but not check other people's kit.
Some additional thoughts would be good from you guys.

In essence mate if you are the PC / Main Contractor employing subbies you should check their competence before you contract them. so would you accept a lower standard from what you would expect from your own company?

Given you still have a duty of care to make sure your subcontractor is taking care of himself and others as well; I would ask them to provide evidence of ladder inspections on their equipment.

As previously said there is the duty of care issue, also as the controller of the site you have a responsibility to ensure unsafe actions are not being undertaken, so do you consider someone using an untested ladder to be a safe activity?
If done by a trained person a ladde inspection only takes a matter of minutes.

Wayne and Dav are correct in what they say, your duty of care actions around in my opinion should be to request evidence that inspections are carried out, and that ladders used on site are labelled as being fit for use.
Obviously for your own people someone in your company (or a contractor) should do regular nspections of your kit, ideally the person doing the inspections should be competant and trained.

I thought that it was down to the user of the ladder to check that it is fit for use. Apart from routine inspections, can we really be expected to check every contractor ladder that comes on site?

It is down to the employer to ensure that ladders are fit for use and I cannot see how an inspection programme can be avoided. For the PC this means ensuring the subbies have a system in place that is acceptable and monitoring that they are actually doing the job.
