Posted By jeanne fairbrother An issue has just been raised about storage of hard hats on a college premises Our construction students are given hard hats and they have to then keep them with them. They are regularly checked and maintained and replaced if damaged but the nature of the site means that staff and students have to keep the hard hats with them and wear them as they enter the site. The issue has been raised that the college is not providing storage facilities for the hard hats as required under the regs. The problem is lack of space with the very large number of students on this site. Would this be considered acceptable? I'd appreciate any thoughts or comments please or what other institutions do about this?

Posted By Stuff4blokes Jeanne, a tough one I think. Whilst there is a clear duty to provide adequate storage etc for PPE, in the working world on a building site most operatives would provide their own hard hats and take them away at hometime. What is reasonable here? My view is you are preparing the students for work life and taking responsibility for their own PPE is part of that. I have no doubt others will have the opposite view and advise that adequate storage must be provided. However, this is hardly a life-safety issue and as you state the condition of the hats is regularly monitored and presumably their use is enforced where and when needed, I think you can rest easily.

Posted By John J Jean, it may be worth doing a survey to see what the size of your problem is. You may find very few students want this facility so your problem is reduced, John
