Just a query if anyone can help. Is there a minimum amount of days required legally in order to be deemed as competent to operate a FLT in-house. I have looked through PUWER and it just says that the operator needs to be competent. I have an in-house instructor who does the training and will test them and then sign them off but other individuals are saying they need to be trained and licensed to RTITB standards. I understood that this standard and others like them are good and allow individuals to be able to operate them in other environments but I only want anyone we train to be deemed competent to operate the equipment safely on our sites.
many thanks for any assistance

tb,
ITSSAR recommend that if you have driving experience then it is a 3 day course. If you have no driving experience then it is a 5 day course. But the course is just basic skills, your not deemed as competent. Normally what happens then is that after their training the trainee returns to his company and may do a test through their own in-house instructors and then under close supervision operate their FLT's until they are deemed competent. These are not hard and fast rules but what i've experienced previously being an ex FLT instructor.

RTITB and other accredited bodies stipulate minimum training durations, this depends on experience and numbers of delegates on the course. The ACOP L117 gives good guidance on training. As an FLT instructor for over 10 years my advice would be to ensure that your in house instructor has undertaken an instructors course with one of the six bodies that are HSE recognised - (RTITB, NPORS, AITT, ITSSAR, CPCS, Lantra). He should then be able to follow their guidance on course durations.
