Posted By DaGuru I've been tasked with assessing the noise levels in a workplace and would like to clarify a few points with you professionals in the safety field to ensure I understand the requirements. Joe Bloggs working in factory ABC has been wearing a dosemeter during his typical working day. 7 hours on the shop floor he has been exposed to 85dB(A), 1 hour consisting of 3 seperate tea breaks he has been exposed to 65dB(A). This is repeated 5 days a week during his normal working shift. Using the HSE's exposure calculator Im told that his daily noise exposure (LEP,d) is 84dB(A) and as it only passes the 1st action level I do not need to make his work area a hearing protection zone, just fulfil the requirements for passing the first action level by informing the persons in the work area that an assessment has been carried out, which they can see if they wish and provide adequate ear defenders if requested by the employee. Is my understanding ok?

Posted By Coshh Assessor As it's above the lower action level of 80dB(A), you also have to take reasonable steps (other than PPE) to reduce the noise exposure, and monitor his hearing.
