Posted By Mike Hann As part of our Safe Systems of Work for the charging of fork lift truck batteries, we have always insisted that prior to connection of batteries to charger, that the wall switch is switched off and also the switch on the charger itself. Once batteries have been charged, the switch on the charger is switched off, then the wall switch, before disconnection of the cables. Can one of you please advise whether switching off at the wall is still a recommended practice, in addition to the switching off on the charger itself. From memory, the main reason for insisting that the wall switch and the charger switch were both required to be switched off, was in case there was a fault with the switch on the charger which could potentially short out the connections and cause burns and also to potentially ignite any hydrogen present. Thank you.

Posted By A Campbell Mike, As far as I am aware you are correct. If a fault develops you will eliminate the power supply as a possible ignition source so is good standard practice. In addition you can always use it as good practice to save power and reduce your carbon emissions?
