Posted By Ben Hughes Hi, Does any body have any information regarding maximum allowable wind speeds for crane operations? This may sound like a stupid question because we should base it on the manufacturers specifications for the crane and the appointed persons lifting plan etc, however there is more to the question. Our engineering dept has specified cranes for 18 m/s and we operate in alot of countries without the requirements for lifting plans, in addition there is little or no training for appointed persons. I am currently writing a standard for the safety of lifting operations and would like to specify a specific maximum wind speeds (for example 12m/s) - if I do this I want to have something to back me up such as any standards/legislation? Any help would be gratefully appreciated, Ben

C703 Crane Stability on Site an introductory guide TYPICAL MAXIMUM IN-SERVICE WIND SPEEDS Tower cranes 20m/s (45mph) Crawler cranes 14m/s (31mph) Mobile cranes 9.8m/s (22mph) For specific limitations on the crane in use you should check with the manufacturer. Operational limitations may well be lower than these figures, eg when handling loads with a large wind area such as wide formwork panels. Regards Mike
