Stating the obvious it isn't covered by LOLER. BS7121 covers it although not a legal requirement it is a Industry code..

The legal requirement can be seen on the HSE prosecutons database.
Persons using any work equipment must be trained. The level and duration of training is pertinent to the risks associated.
Lorry mounted cranes used by untrained people is quite simply asking for problems. The legal requirement is 'adequate training, information, instruction and supervision'. HASAWA 1974 Section 2.
There are not legal requirements for you to use any scheme such as CPCS, etc. These are voluntary schemes, but good practice...

Thanks, I appreciate that the requirement for training is within both the Management of H&S at work Regs and H&S act, but what concerns me is that there are some companies whom are using persons trained in house, with no external verification or certification, and I was hoping there was a specific peice of legislation other than those (such as - for example - the requirement for a driving licence to cover the type of vehicle).
Thanks again, I have had a troubling conflicting report from the BSC helpline, hence posting my request here.

As a former Hiab vehicle operator and now HSE professional, i too am alarmed at the minute amount of training required to operate a HIAB. When you see the damage that can be caused (speaking from experience) by this bit of kit, i feel it should come under CPCS.
From memory, the only requirement to operate a HIAB was " operators must be familiar with the instructions in the owners handbook"... alarming

In order to err on the side of caution, I have decided to use a HSE registered provider for a course for my guys. Thanks to everyone that responded by the way, given their impact it is a shame there arent more resources on the HSE website dedicated to providing the same level of advice as they do for risk assessment, fire and young workers etc.
