Posted By Peter MacDonald Two quick questions as my web searches have bared no fruit. 1. What constitutes 'competence' of a scaffold designer. Is there a specific qualification? 2. What is the fundamental difference according to TG20 between debris netting and sheeting. Thanks in advance Pete

Posted By Martin Daly There is no specific qualification in the UK but there is in other EU Countries to being a scaffold designer. The difference between debris netting and sheeting. debris netting forms a resistance of up to 85% to the wind. Sheeting its 100%. Martin Daly

Posted By Peter MacDonald Thanks Martin. One more question if I may. I've been told that if debris netting or sheeting is used then then scaffold must be designed but looking at the NASC checklist on when a scaffold must be designed I don't see any mention of either. Can you shed some light on that. Thanks in advance. Pete

Posted By P.R Hi Peter, You will find that anything other than a "basic standard" scaffold will require a design. Adding debris netting or Mona-flex sheeting will create a "sail effect". Because of this, it needs to be designed for wind loads to be calculated and in the event that additional ties are required. Regards PR

Posted By Peter MacDonald Thank you That's what I was thinking but I'm surprised it's not mentioned in the NASC list I downloaded from the HSE website. Pete
