Hi,

We have an ext flammable paint product on site used for a specific process. We store approx 100l of this in a purpose built ATEX complaint external flammable storage unit. Only 2 x 5l drums of the substance are kept in the workplace due to operational requirements and these are within a 30 min fire rated flammable cabinet. Prob arrived when the paint has caused QA problems lately and the cause appears to be the temperatures within the outside storage unit are effecting the quality of the paint (Less than 5 C). I'm considering arranging for the purchase of additional flammable storage units for inside the factory but not totally comfortable as DSEAR guidance advises against this for obvious reasons. Is is possible to insulate paint drums or sections of flammable storage units against cold temperatures?

It is possible to construct an insulated box but all this would do is reduce the rate of temperature drop. The better the insulation the slower the rate of drop. If you had a couple of days of -5 air temps that inside the box would eventually drop to that also.
If the substance is temperature sensitive you might have to consider a suitably sized structure containing frost protection.

Sorry, for some reason read less than 5 as -5 but you get my drift about temperature control.

I am assuming that you have an inventory of 20 X 5 litre containers within the store?

Unless you are decanting directly from the individual containers you do not have to consider spillage from or catastrophic failure of any single container so you will not have a zone 2 within the storage cabinet.

Put it another way, the storage of paints within a retail premises are not covered by DSEAR/ATEX on the basis as that discussed above.

As far as DSEAR goes it msakes no difference if the paint is stored inside or externally.

At locations where the paint container is opened and dispensed a hazardous area will exist.
