Posted By martinw For those who are sick of people moaning about H&S being to blame for the preponderance of road signs, I say this today: Road Signs(Tourist Destinations and Facilities) Bill 2008/2009 which is currently going through parliament. Its aim: ...to impose duties on the Highways Agency and other public authorities to promote tourism by providing or permitting to be provided appropriate road signage; and for connected purposes. Duties! So the next time someone moans about H&S and roadsigns, here is evidence that it comes from Parliament.

Posted By A Campbell martin, Are parliament going to decide what sign is placed where? I very much doubt it... I'm expecting a new government agency to spring up for that task! Heard this on the radio..... country roads may be affected a lot more apparently!

Posted By martinw Slippery slope again in that the legislation is clearly designed for the tourist. It will be mis-used by local authorities and as usual, the blame will go to the wrong place. Got a satnav, don't care.

Posted By martinw However, seriously - I know that too many signs cause dificulty in actively reading them properly. Is there any legislation which says that you cannot put up any more signs, of if you do, you have to take some others down? Otherwise at tourist destinations there will be loads and loads. Surely so many signs could cause more accidents on the roads?

Posted By AMelrose Was driving home one night and counted 52 signs in a stretch of road less than a mile in length one night - from signs detailing new housing developments (about 15 of those) to actual Highway code type ones..

Posted By martinw But is there anything anywhere other than local good sense to say that there should be a limit on the number of signs which are allowed? Each extra non-essential one surely diminishes the effectiveness of the remaining other highway code style ones.
