Posted By simonwm Can i ascertain peoples opinion on how much detail would you expect to be included within the responsibilities section of a Health & Safety Policy for Supporting Contractors to a Construction Firm, there is obviously a legal requirement for each contractor to have their own policy but what detail should a competent contractor include as back up to this?? I have my own personal opinions but am looking to gain that of others!!

Posted By Raymond Rapp The health and safety policy need only be a brief statement. In any case, I would not give much credence to this document in ascertaining the competency of a contractor. Other means such as PPQs, start-up meetings, method statements are far more intrusive.

Posted By Luke. I may have this wrong Raymond but i believe he was asking about detailing the responsibilities of the sub-contractor in his OWN H&S policy. Nothing to do with statement of intent.

Posted By simonwm To clarify it is the responsibilities section i am referring to.... and also how would you respond if the Principal Contractor was stating in Construction Documentation that he would expect supporting contractors to work to his or the clients H&S Policy??

Posted By Ron Hunter The answer to your first question is entirely dependent on the size and complexity of the contractor, however HSE publication at http://www.hse.gov.uk/business/policy.htmshould serve as a minimum guide for you (and the contractor. You second question: Entirely correct. The Client should have expressed his own H&S goals for the Project within the PCI/Contract Information. (The astute Client will have his Policy Statement of Intent written so as to be directly transferable to the PCI) It follows then that all concerned with the Project are obliged to comply and cooperate with these same goals.
