Hi,
Just a short one that people can hopefully help me with.
Does anyone have any idea how you go about CRB checking people, what is the process? How long does it take? and how much does it cost.
I know this is loosely safety based but any help would be appreciated.
We have a situation where contractors are to be working on nurserys, but this will only be weekends and no children or Teachers are present so why the CRB checks would be required is anybodies idea. Has anyone else come across this because i always thought the idea of the checks were for people likely to come in contact with children where these guys are not.
Thanks in advance.
Alan

The local council's CRB team that covers the area that you are to have these people work in should be able to help
In my person opinion CRB is OK when worked to properly - note the word 'properly' as on many occasions I have found that 'local rules' have changed the parameters
Its not cheap and its ongoing
On the BBC radio today it was stated that a number of high profile writers have refused to continue to offer their services [that were free!] to schools because of how CRB is being interpreted

I've got a few CRB checks - I belong to a few different voluntary organisations and none of them will accept a CRB done for any of the others!
I've never been a fan of the system - it doesn't prove you're not a nasty person, it only proves you've never been caught, and worse, it can lull people into a false sense of security, thinking they've done all that's necessary and not bothering with any other precautions. They're a bit like PAT testing...:-)
It's also a bit of a pain in the neck to do - you used to have to send your personal docs off for checking as proof of identity - at least they've now got the system where you can take your docs for checking at the Post Office, and they just send off a form saying they've checked your docs and they're all in order. Having said that, when I took mine in to a central London PO a couple of months back, neither the counter person or the counter supervisor had ever seen one before and had to do it step by step from the manual. And even then they managed to get my date of birth, and the issue date of my driving licence, the wrong way round!
That said, I don't understand what the children's writers are so upset about - I have to have CRB for voluntary work that puts me in much less contact with vulnerable people than they have, and I've had to for years. I'm amazed they've never been made to do it before.

It can take quite a while for a check to go through and as said before you can not transfer an CRB from one organisation to another

The system was badly thought out people with spent convictions still appear, children are placed on the sex offenders register for under aged intercourse and foreigners dont appear at all.
However if children are at risk then its a necessary evil.

If I was you I would ring the Independent Safeguarding Authority who have effectively taken over all aspects of protecting children and vulnerable adults from harm. From my experience with them they are exceptionally helpful and give the advice you will need.
I do not see why your folks need to be CRB checked if there is no contact with children. But give them a call on 0300 123 1111, as they may be able to tell you the reasons why, or if it is not required, they may be able to help you with that. They really are good and will help you with the CRB questions too.
cheers

This is an example where the need for CRB check has been totally misunderstood.
Why on earth would a contractor (who only works when the nursery is closed) need a CRB check?
CRB is only needed where the worker has unsupervised access to children or vulnerable adults.
Although not health and safety its another for th bonkers brigade.
ITK.

Agreed ITK. Worse still, this is a waste of time and money and just gums up the works for the prompt turnaround of the applications that do matter.
What on earth are they going to do if half way through the Project a further specialist contractor has to be called in (e.g. an asbestos incident, pipe burst or electrical fault for example)?
Applying this process to contractors (irrespective of whether the kids are there or not) is just crazy.
