Posted By GavinR Hi,
We have the standard rescue tripod and winch system for our confined space rescue equipment however a recent RA has identified that on retrivel of an unconsious person from a confined space on site would be difficult using the tripod. The tripod is positioned outside the structure (furnace) doorand would require the injured person to be retrieved with the winch at an angle of 50 degrees. There is also a metal bracket at the door of the furnace that protrudes into the furnace slightly and would be an obstruction for removing a 'dead' weight from the door. This can be cut but would be very inpracticable to do each time we work on the furnace.
I was trying to find a portable winch system that would be similar to to a jib crane that could be positioned at the door of the furnace and and extend into the structure. I have only been able to find the standard tripod equipment though through my searches- would any one have purchased something similar before and be able to point me in the right direction?
Cheers

Posted By FAH Hi Gavin
In my experience trying to winch a casualty who cannot help themselves in anything other than an unobstructed vertical lift is fraught with problems.
Almost invariably, the casualty will come out of a situation like your furnace looking more like shark-bait than anything else unless you use some form of interface between the casualty and the surface.
Could you please confirm the type of furnace & relative dimensions to help myself & others provide better focussed opinion?

Posted By GavinR Hi Frank, thanks for your response. I am currently discussing possible solutions to our problem with a specialist supplier so hopefully they will be able to help me out. Just for reference the furnace has 1 main door opening (approx 1m wide x 1m high) and the internal vestibule for this area is 1m wide x 1.5m depth and 2m high. There is only one access/egress point. We cannot permanently install any fixtures within the furnace for rescue purposes.
My hope is to source a portable jib that will extend into the furnace and provide a vertical lift. Hopefully this company I'm talking with can help.

Posted By Andrew Beveridge Hi Gavin, You may wish to consider a lightweight 'ramp' that can be inserted through the opening to allow a 'dead weight' to be dragged up and out using your existing winch and tripod system.
This would reduce the shark bait scenario alluded to above (nice imagery though!)
This ramp can also be useful for moving equipment in and out of the doorway.
Hope that helps. Good luck! Regards Andy

Posted By FAH Thank you Andrew.
Gavin - would this be anything like CHP or possibly a contaminated waste furnace? Anyway, does the furnace have grates or grids at intermediate levels? These are often overlooked but can totally negate any procedures &/or equipment.
Is your furnace in the UK? If the answer to "in the UK" is yes, I would suggest that given the way that you've worded your previous post, you should remind your specialist supplier that they will be in the position of providing consultancy and MHSW Reg 21 will apply. At the very least that should ensure a more cautious approach.
If you need anything specific, drop me an email [via the Consultants register].
