Posted By Rod D Hi Guys I wonder if any of you Fire Professionals can help me. If a Fire Extinguisher is ten years old but in good condition should it be taken out of commission? Or is this the case of an over zealous Fire Engineer Aye Rod D

Posted By tony fog Hi there, The engineer is trained to follow BS 5306 P3, they compare the equipment against the criteria and discharge tests etc, I suggest ten years is a good shelf life for equipment and wouldn't be too unreasonable to expect it to be replaced

Posted By Kevin Walker Rod, Essentially a fire extinguisher that is 10 years old requires discharge and pressure testing. The cost of this extra testing is usually higher than the cost of replacement. In the end easier replace than test. kevin

Posted By Mike Craven Rod If an extinguisher is in good condition and continues to be serviceable, there is absolutely no need to replace it just because it is 10 years old (or older!) I suspect that my bosses would find it extremely "unreasonable" if I told them to replace (hundreds) of perfectly good, serviceable fire extinguishers in our offices, depots and housing stock just because they were 10 years old! As far as extended servicing (discharge and pressure testing) is concerned, it is every ten years for CO2 and I'd agree that it probably costs as much to have the extended service as it does to buy a new extinguisher. However, as far as "extended servicing" for water, foam or dry powder extinguishers (every five years) is concerned, I pay £12.50 (for 9 litre water) and £20 (for 9 litre foam) - I pay a lot more for new extinguishers!
