Posted By Amy Upton Hi I have recently taken over as club secretary and fixtures secretary, as a qualified HSE advisor I am aware of the usual stuff like fire, first aid, insurance etc but does anyone know of any guidance out there that can help us run our club a little more safely. Amy

Posted By Flic A major consideration in a sports club is the competence of the coaches and trainers. For this a sport's national governing body, if there is one, can be a godsend in assessing and demonstrating the competence of your helpers. This can often be part of the insurance of the activity - for example my coach award for my particular sport covers me both when I am coaching in the club and also when I take the players to other events. The affiliation of the club to the national governing body provides insurance for our equipment, and the individual licensing system for the participants provides insurance for them. Flic

Posted By Jeffrey Watt Flic, as usual, is on the money. Not sure how Sport developmennt is organised in GB but in NI the local council will usually have an officer responsible for Sports development(at least we do). They should have a wealth of contacts and draft policies that you can adapt as well as knowing vast amounts about funding, constitutions, shared facilities etc. Lot depends on your sport and where it fits in the local youth development agenda. Hope that helps. Jeff

Posted By h&s newgirl If allowing childrens activities don't forget your CRB checks. Consideration for disabled children. Training on conflict avoidance and challenging behaviour for your coaches. If you can get hold of the BAALPE guidance its a resource for safe practice of PE and sports in schools but gives great advice from accident reporting to supervision ratios for all kinds of activities.
