Posted By Kevin john Potts Does anyone know if there is an issue with the rf signals sent out by pick by voice systems. We use a system where the operator wheres a head set and the system tells them which location to visit and how many items to pick. We have been asked if there is potential long term issues using this system from the rf waves. I have googled this and most stuff was about mobile phones and opinion was somewhat divided. Can anyone point me in the right direction ? Thanks Kev

Posted By Mike Foulds Hi Kevin About 6 years ago I introduced voice picking into my distribution centre(Currys my previous company), it was at the time when mobile phone brain tumours were the concern and a number of staff questioned the safety of the voice picking units. The units we used were the Vocollect T20 which were a waist belt mounted unit with corded headphones. The manufacturer had all the safety data to show the units were safe but some staff thought it was a cover up and so to keep the issue under control we had a survey carried out by the National Radiological Protection Board (yes it was costly). The findings from them backed up the manufacturers claims that the units were safe and because the unit worked on small bursts of RF information not a continuous stream were classed as safer than a mobile, especially being waist mounted. With all this data we did have to give a very small number of staff an ultimatum, follow the new process or look for another job. Once installed and all staff were up to speed the productivity savings were significant and the staff actually preferred the units as it gave both hands free to handle products. Good luck Mike
