Posted By sezm2105 Hi Home working sounds great however I have just realised what a Pandora's box I have opened- as usual! I have got a copy of INDG 226, and understand that I have to get the work equipment that the employer provides PAT tested for example. I am slightly concerned about the prospect of carrying out risk assessment in peoples homes. I don't think that I can get the individual who work at home to r/a themselves as they are not trained and competent (this is something my boss thinks is good idea- I'm not so sure) Any suggestions as I feel that this could be a potential mine field! Posted By Raymond Rapp Sarah It is a potential minefield, especially if you follow HSE guidance! The simple way to do this and assuming the homeworker is using a PC and other office type equipment, is to do a check sheet of potential hazards - one pager should suffice. These will not be any greater in a home environment than an office one. The employer is only responsible for the equipment they provide, presumably not much. Much safer working from home than travelling to work by road/rail, but I bet no one includes that in their risk assessment. Ray

Posted By martinw You wouldn't Ray as commuting to your normal place of work is not 'covered' by HASAWA :->

Posted By martinw Me too - just being silly. It reduces stress, fatigue, reduces the risk of contracting the odd virus! I have often found that inexperienced managers are the ones not in so much favour of their teams doing any work from home as it minimises control and stretches their ability to supervise.

Posted By Kieran J Duignan Sarah Effective risk assessments can make a signficant positive difference to defusing most mines in 'mine fields'. Methodical, incisive steps for conducting valid risk assessments for home workers include 1. documenting the task goals and activities, and their limits clearly 2. pinpointing sources of hazards which are no self-evident, e.g. those associated with repetitive strains and other musculoskeletal disorders 3. carrying out a single A4 page surveillance once a month and taking any corrective actions.
