Posted By the pencil Hi All , I require some advice regarding a HAV monitoring system I am putting together for a Golf Course and their Green keepers. When recording the exposure times should I use points per minute or points per hour. This needs to be easy for staff to record. Also how often does machinery need to be measured or can I just use manufacturers data. Many Thanks..

Posted By Elfy If at all possible I would use the HSE ready reckoner which will allow points to be determined at less than an hour. This will then allow a more accurate points total as the day progresses and points are accumulated. Alternatively, if you feel you can allow an hours worth of points for 30 minutes usage without the points exceeding 400 for the day then in my opinion it would be a simpler system to operate. As long as the machinery is maintained to a good standard and you have no concerns about possible increased vibration then I would continue to use the manufacturers data.

Posted By Emma Forbes I agree, half hour intervals are better, certainly for our sector where operatives are more than likely not using the same piece of equipment for an hour at a time. I have a copy of our recording sheet if that's any use to you. E-mail me and I'll forward it on.

Posted By Bob Youel manufacturers data is only useful as a stater base line so real time measurement is probably one of your only defence tools in a court and get an Occ health professional to provide guidance and create a medical questionnaire to issue to staff to start your bench marking exercise Risk assess the reality situation first e.g. what if we have a claim - what would it cost us - what is the likelyhood of one of our staff having HAVS - can we defend a case or is it cheaper to pay etc; as all the effort may be a waste of time noting other areas you may have to deal with that may be more 'pressing' One grounds area that I worked in paid out ~£250K per person [yep per person!] where another grounds area [like for like works etc]paid out ~£100K combined and it all revolved around previous work history as differing workforces may have completely different work histories that will affect HAVS so obtain a previous employment history e.g. previous work in heavy manufacturing = higher risk

Posted By Bob Y You can use manufacturers data, but you should check that this is representative of the likely exposure to your employees; if not the HSE suggest doubling the manufacturers figure. While this can seem rather over the top, do bear in mind that any measurements that you arrange and pay for can be highly variable and dependant on many factors.
