Posted By Ken M I guess I am just after opinions at this stage. Having read the HSE guidance on the matter I thought I would ask the professionals out there. I have a project coming up which is located near a bank of water. It will be deep in places and is The foot print of our building means we will be erecting around 8-10 meters away from where we are erecting. Site fencing is in place so we cannot travel any closer. The building is quite high and I am deliberating whether to have harnesses warn or not. Thinking that should the MEWP tip over in the direction of the water there is a possibility he way enter the water. The ground is in excellent shape and is firm and level. Boundaries are in place and my initial though is that it is unlikely an operative will fall into the water and therefore harnesses will need to be worn and anchored. Your thoughts please Thanks

Posted By Peter Zunda Ken, look at HSE Information Sheet MISC614; "When working next to water, a harness should not be worn due to the risk of drowning if the MEWP falls into the water. Life jackets should be worn."

Posted By Andrew Borland Is it a MEWP than can be driven or is it a push around? The official guide is for working over water, so it depends how near, if they have to turn the machine over the water when using it, i would think they should not be wearing a harness. As far as i am aware push around machines don't require harnesses to be worn at all only the ones you can drive when extended.

Posted By Ken M They are only working NEAR water and will not be positioning the basket over it. My general questions is how near is near? They will be 8-10 meters away from the water which is fully barried off at site. a 8-10 meter wide walkway measures from the site boundary to the secure fencing of the water. As mentioned they will not be positioning themselves over the water or leaving the site boundary? THanks ken
