Posted By alexlev Hello I'm a student of Medicine and Public Health and I'm writing a paper about the benefits of risk management in hospitals. I haven't found any article or document that provides quantitative proofs concerning the benefits of RM. Does anybody know about specific article, document or internet site that includes quantitative proofs. thanks, Alex

Posted By D. Hilton You could try entering "Hospital Risk Management" in google scolar. In addition to numerous articles you will also find LL Morlock, FE Malitz - Law and Contemporary Problems, 1991 - HeinOnline LAW AND CONTEMPORARY PROBLEMS Volume 54 Spring 1991 Number 2 DO HOSPITAL RISK MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS MAKE A DIFFERENCE?: RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN RISK MANAGEMENT PROGRAM ACTIVITIES AND HOSPITAL MALPRACTICE CLAIMS EXPERIENCE

Posted By Raymond Rapp Alex As 'risk' is subjective I am not sure what qualitative evidence you are looking for. Risk Management is about the management of risk and reducing those risks to ALARP. There may be evidence of certain interventions that reduce hospital diseases such as MRSA, or reducing slips, trips and falls, but unfortunately I am not aware of them. Whether this evidence is 'qualitative' I have some doubt, probably more anecdotal. Ray

Posted By alexlev Thank You for the fast responses. I'm looking for information on general risk management activities in hospitals and spesific interventions and their influence on the "quantity" of legal demands, patient complaints, accidents, staff errors and money saved. I have already searched for information in google, yahoo groups, American Society for Healthcare Risk Management, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, NHS, The Physician Insurers Association of America. But i haven't found any papers that show (statistically) the gains achieved by the hospitals and patients, after improving RM.

Posted By EC Hello Most hospitals in Scotland now work to the QIS (Quality improvement Scotland) Risk management standard which is loosly based on the Austrailian and New Zealand standard: Standards Australia International Limited. AS/NZS 4360: 2004 Risk Management. Try this for a start and let me know if you need anything else. http://www.nhshealthqual...l%20Gov%20April%2005.pdf you typically find that most hospitals have a risk management department and also a H&S safety department.

Posted By ColinPink Hello, Try the NHSLA home pages. They used to have statistics saying how much litgigation changed year on year and off the top of my head the number claims was dropping following the implementtation of CNST RPST and the new ARMS standards. You have to wade through the publications section of the site. I think the annual reports had good data in them. Colin
