Hi,
Just a quick one to draw a straw poll really. Most company work vehicles/vans etc are checked and signed off daily by the driver and i imagine most people do the same for a company car. But do most people have the same time frame for checks for company cars as opposed to the vans etc. So do most people complete company car checks daily, weekly, monthly?
Cheers Alan

I suspect that nothing is done between routine services, just the same as most private motorists, perhaps even less as the company car user has no real vested interest in the ongoing condition of value of the vehicle and "safety is looked after by the garage... isn't it?"
I speak as an ex-company car driver for nearly 30 years with 5 different companies. In all that time only two of my employers ever did any inspections (annual) and whilst the company handbooks talked about vehicle checks, it meant nothing in practice.

We fill in a sheet monthly to say we have checked, oil, tyres, etc. This is done when we give our monthly mileage on an electronic spread sheet.

AJM,
There is, and should be, a difference in how commercial and “private” vehicles are managed. It is quite proper to insist on commercial vehicles being under a regime of documented daily and weekly checks. Despite what is said about company cars, the commercial fleet will inevitably have a more difficult life and be subject to a greater level of abuse.
With company cars, the employer should have a documented system of safety checks that drivers are encouraged to maintain, and make available a facility for drivers to comply with that. It is also a good idea to make some basic training available to drivers on how to check tyre pressures, fluid levels etc. Enforcing this is problematic. If you decide you are going to make it mandatory, you must audit compliance and be prepared to take action when it is not done. I can guarantee this will be everyone from the MD down!
