Posted By Ianmoss Has anyone had experience in developing and using a H&S scorecard to measure front line managers compliance with a plethora of H&S responsibilities? I'm considering developing something which would adopt a traffic light approach but I'd welcome any pointers which may help. I've Googled the query in the hope that I may find a template to start me off, but there seems to be little out there of any use, so if anyone would be generous enough to share, I'd appreciate that.

Posted By stephen smith HI Ian, Scorecard systems are good but you need an indepth appreciation of the indivduals job + responsibilities along with their buy in. You may end up with three or four versions, the first being the simplest. Please also remember that these indiviudals will need training and guidance, you will also need to get their reasoning and understanding of what you require, so this is not a quick system you desire to install. If you need any more info please email me on sphererhsm@aol.com regards stephen

Posted By Ian Waldram I suggest it would probably be divisive to think about scoring individuals, or their departments/ areas of responsibility. You should consider a rating system which encourages people to work together, rather than compete. Have you considered HaSPI, available from HSE website? It covers everything important and also allows some benchmarking against others in your sector. We've used it internally in IOSH for a couple of years and it's been an aid to improvement - though because most IOSH employees are doing low hazard activities, we began with quite a high score. To ensure the data used is 'fair' you can involve employees in checking it and also identifying what to do to improve. Ian Waldram IOSH Trustee

Posted By Raymond Rapp Ian With a previous employer they had a similar process for site inspections and probably the best system I have come across to date. It could be adapted for other uses I'm sure. Basically, each site was scored from 0-10, with 7 being legislative standard, 8 company standard, 9 and 10 exceeding, whilst 5-6 was an Improvement Notice, 4 or below was Prohibition Notice. All this data was collected on an XL spreadsheet and hence benchmarked against other sites. Finally, scores of 6 and below were used to identify near misses. Used constructively it could be quite useful, not so sure about yellow and red cards. Things have moved on somewhat and as others have alluded to, co-operation is better than confrontation. Ray

Posted By SteveD-M Ian I have a template but as discussed above buy in etc...which I'm sure you are aware of. This was measured in Managers (bonus) and also the site safety committees' (safety vouchers) performance. You have mail...
