I have just been informed by a third party that we must have vehicle reverse alarms at 80dB(a) to meet legislative requrements. I am sure I have heard/seen this elsewhere, but not sure where. My company have a fleet of over 700 vehicles so it is important that we get the specification right before modifying our vehicles. Can anyone tell me whether this is in fact a legislative requirment and provide me with the reference?

I am not aware of this legislative requirement and judging by the lack of responses, no one else is either. Indeed, a dumper truck I pulled over the other day did not have a reversing bleeper fitted on it!

In fact, 80 dBA is not that high, given the types of environment that vehicles often have to work in. Not sure even if there is a standard but I will make some enquiries.

j it will depend on the environment the HGV wagons are working in, a good risk assessment should help you decide weather you would need other control measures along with the reversing alarm, i would probably think most reversing alarms have a standard dba but the manufacturer will be able to help you out on that one

Also have a look at the white noise warnings which are in use. Less noise polluting for people living near reversing areas.

There are many companies which supply them, googling revealed 52,000 UK results.
