Galvanised metal used as BBQ grill toxic or not?

Posted By Hugo A friend offered to build me a new BBQ using Galvanised grill and stated the grill was heated by the coals - turned to a colour of yellow and brushed off easily. He will even provide the steel brush.
Am I correct in thinking the galvanisation process may be carcinogenic and that anything that glows yellow should be treated with caution??

I don't think that galvanisation gives rise to a cancer risk (it is, after all, only the deposition of zinc on steel) but I don't think using galvanised metal in a barbeque is a good idea from a food contamination point of view; stick to stainless steel.

Posted By John Richards Breathing in zinc oxide fumes can cause headache, nausea, sore throat and fever. Ingesting zinc oxide will lead to rather more problems...the oxide reacts with stomach acids to become zinc chloride (weak).

That can't be bad advice!

Use stainless or simple clog-iron (mild steel) but not galvanised for both fume and food contamination reasons.
