Posted By Robert_N Hi All, the company has been approached by a number of its workers with regard to shift changes due to Ramadan, they have requested a shift change to take into account the time of year and their eating pattens. They have requested they work the early shift 06:00 - 13:30 instead of the 14:00-21:30 so they feel fresher to work. Anyone come across this type of request and would you have done the same as we are and allowing it?

Posted By Jay Joshi There is no universal solution as it will depend upon your specific situation, but you can refer to the ACAS gudance on "Religion or belief and the workplace" at:- http://www.acas.org.uk/C...pHandler.ashx?id=107&p=0

Posted By Lilian McCartney I think it's a reasonable request and if it was applicable here (we haven't had any requests so far) we would make these temporary arrangements. Lilian

Posted By John Donaldson Robert, I would suggest that you have a word to their Religious Leader regarding Ramadan. Under certain circumstances dispensations can be granted, if for example fasting were to put the person in danger. We had a number of Muslims who carried out research involving, dangerous substances or loan working and it was always a concern that fasting could cause fainting We were always able to come to an understanding with both them and their Religious Leaders as to how to manage the situation as a blanket policy was not always appropriate.

Posted By Brian Peirce It's only my personal opinion (although I suspect one that is shared by the silent majority) but I simply do not agree that ANY religion should be afforded special privileges in the workplace, school system and society. Especially since there is not a single scrap of scientific or other evidence to support such beliefs.

Posted By Peter F. I think it is reasonable as long as all religions are given the same entitlement.
