Hi All,
The college that I work in are doing away with paper registers. Instead, tutors will log attendence of students at a terminal (PC) in each classroom which will feed back to a central server. As I'm from industry, the prospect of a 'paperless roll call' unsettled me at first, but other practitioners that I know who work in College/uni's have similar systems.
I'm happy with our fire marshal set-up but was wondering if there's anybody out there with similar experinces and any useful insight or advice.

Hi SL,
I personally never recommend roll call systems of any kind precisely because there is an almost 100% certainty that they are not going to be up to date. "I'm just nipping out for a whatever" or "I didn't get round to updating it" or "I forgot to sign out / in" etc etc.
Much better to have a sweep system with fire wardens checking their respective areas.

SL I too work for a College and we use the sweep system with wardens reporting to person in charge that there area is clear.

I think the electronic systems can only be relied on if they are linked to physical access (ie you have to swipe in/out to open the entrance/exit). Even then they are not perfect.
I agree that a sweep would make more sense.

We have never had a paper roll call, with people moving in and out of the site and around the site( we have two fire assembly points: people go to the nearest). So a sweep makes more sense.

Add my voice to the "pro-sweep" movement. There are any number of reasons why students, college staff and visitors may appear on the computer list as present when they are not and vice versa.
