Posted By Andrew Kelleher Hi Could anyone shed some light on an issue for me. When assessing an individuals capability to work within a confined space (wearing full breathing apparatus, and obviously formal training given) is there any requirement to perform a formal medical examination on the individual? Or can a persons capability be assessed by means of in - house assessment (e.g. suitable questionnaire). Thanks Andy

Posted By Raymond Rapp Andrew It is my understanding that all persons using breathing apparatus (for confined spaces) must be medically assessed as fit to use breathing apparatus by a registered Occupational Health Provider, who shall also determine the frequency of any future medical examination. Check out Confined Spaces Regulations L101 Approved Code of Practice for more information. Ray

Posted By GT Andrew, Additionally it maybe prudent to conduct such a medical assessment for those selected to enter confined spaces (as they are defined with certain criteria) which makes the task hazardous. If they clear this hurdle then you have the restrictions of a the BA Sets vis a vis entry space, weight of the unit versus the physical strength and size of the entrant and the task to be achieved over a period of time in a limited space. Hence stress level go up and have to be taken into account which cannot be assessed at a calm medical centre. If they are using an airline system then again there are issues which need to be addressed and I am not sure that they are all assessed within the medical that you are envisaging. Just my view if it is of help Regards GT
