Building Site: - Storage/Stacking of Material at Ground Level

Hi All,
What is best practice when it comes to storing/ Stacking of building materials on site (ground level)? is there a set height limit?
I witnessed some rather unsafe stacking of bricks and pulled the site manager up on it but i am now sending a memo out to all staff but wanted to put some figures in..
Thanks

I do not know any specific guidance (although I expect something exists) but surely it would depend on the weight/size and possibly other issues such as ground conditions and other potential hazards if the materials were to fall. If using a FLT or Tele handler the operative should be trained to ensure that the weight distribution is within the capability of the the machine and stored appropriately.
Not much help...but you did ask. Now going for a round of golf.

Cheers Ray, hope Golf was good.
If anyone else has any general good practice points from their experience it would be much appreciated.

Risk assessment is a good tool here, you can ask those responsible for the stacking/storage to write their assessment, that should result in good practice.
I would probably look for common sense - i.e. the use of pallets for bags of plaster, cement, anything else cardboard to keep items of the floor in case of water damage?
You should also look at height restrictions to keep goods away from sprinkler heads if "live".
Manual handling is another issue to include items stored at height, how to handle safely etc.
Another "what if" is what happens if the stored goods fall toward a fire exit if too close?
It is a good idea to be able to see from one end of site to the other so unrestricted views are prefarable.

The WAHR 2005 10 (4)
(4) Every employer shall ensure that materials and objects are stored in such a way as to prevent risk to any person arising from the collapse, overturning or unintended movement of such materials or objects.
I'd say this is your starting point and as previously advised risk assess. If possible can the material storage area be for plant only with no access for pedestrians.
Also CIS 37 may give you some advice to help with your RA
Cant help with a height though hope this helps
