Hi There,
I was wondering if anyone any had information on Foundry work, including working with hot metals, foundry machinery and X ray inspections.
Also if anyone has any Foundry policy information it would be greatly appreciated.
Thankss
Tony

Hi Anthony
Your request covers a truly huge range of topics - would you mind sharing with us what has prompted your post? Anonomised as necessary, of course.

Hi there yes of course,
As an IOSH mentor I give out quite a lot of help and advice and wondered if someone could give some pointers on here.
I have been tasked with carrying out policy and risk assessment formats and wondered if anyone had information rather than reinventing the wheel so to speak.
What I am trying to develop is a “user friendly keep it simple” risk assessment format which the lads on the shop floor will be able to carry out with out too much hassle.
I need formats for Electrical induction furnaces, molding/jobbing machinery, over head cranes and shot blasting etc.
Plus anything on HAV and COSHH to do with the industry.
Thanks again
Tony

I'd be glad to help you out if I can. I have considerable foundry experience in both batch, jobbing and continuous casting including boxless moulding. Casting from 1kg to 30 tonnes, SG, Grey Iron and aluminium.
My advice would be to start with a task listing. I wouldn't jump straight into assessment, you need a plan. The assessment format is best decided once you have seen the range and amount of assessment that you need. If you start with people, location and equipment as three overlapping circles you will start to form a list of exactly what it is that people do. Then prioritize the list using a view of significance; don't just start at A and go through to Z. Foundry work is no real mystery and the hazards are pretty obvious in truth as we pretty much seen it all by now. Control measures are pretty standard across the injury too and of course it's these that are the important part.
If you want any help, feel free to PM me and we can have a chat. If you're not a million miles away, I can always drop in to see you. I appreciate you not wanting to reinvent the wheel, but drawing up an assessment is not hard and is best done to suit the need at hand.
BTW, this is all free, I'm not touting for business, it's good for keeping my skills sharp and of course CPD!!
Regards
Chris

Thanks Chris,
I am visiting the site on Monday and will draw up a list of the equipment they have. I will also find out what systems they have in place etc.
Regards
Tony
