Posted By dave marshall Hi all i work for a roofing company our operatives where last given manual handling training in 2005, i personally think refresher training should be carried out at least yearly, reason being i find operatives need to be reminded of safe lifting techniques as with everything else can get a little rusty and will need reminding as good practice. what do you all think? what is the reccomendation for refresher training? just so i can back my reccomendation up time to persuade the MD cheers

Posted By DaGuru Any company that has a manual handling course really should be looking at following this up with a refresher course. As with any type of training, good practice to follow up with refresher follow-ups at suitable intervals. I say 'suitable intervals' as there is no hard and fast timescale for this to be carried out, so you'll need to make that decision. Reading through the HSE guidance it clearly states that Employers should establish a planned training programme to ensure all staff receive basic training, with updates as required. Hope this helps.

Posted By andrew morris Unfortunately it is down to RA, but in a roofing company (where I presume you do a fair amount of lifting) any half decent RA would probably talk about refresher training and set a timescale. My previous employer ran with a yearly programme of training. But - the refresher trainnig does not need to be long and drawn out - "tool box talks" of 15/20mins can be more than enough to remind people of the reasons why and how to... That way you can justify by saying it is only 20 mins out of everyones working day.
