Does anyone out there know what actual dimensions are believed to constitute a finger trap in the hinge side of a door? I've been scouring the British Standards and can't seem to find anything more than fuzzy statements. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

At the back of my mind is 5mm as the BS standard finger width. You may find some info on safety knife websites.

I have seen doors(modern)which are not hinged to the door jamb but are secured vertically through the lintel and floor. You could get a baby's arm through the gap between the open door and the jamb.

Hi Paul
What size finger? What is the source of your problem that prompted your question?
If you're simply looking for some general remedial measure to minimise & mitigate finger trapping in door hinge gaps, you could do a lot worse that have a look at the "concertina" devices found attached to cover door hinge gaps in most fast-food chain outlets.

This may help...

but it is a bit specific, maybe too specific for your purposes. Have a look at Barbour product search and you can find a lot of different products such as fingersafe on there. Might help.
cheers
