I have recently risk assessed a pregnant lady who works as a warehouse technician. Her job involves a signficant amount of manual handling and although this has now been limited at some point soon I want to move her out of the warehouse and get her to work in our shop to avoid any risk of injury.
The problem is the lady concerned is a little unconfident and has already expressed to her line manager that she does not want to work in a customer facing role in the shop.
I know there is an option to suspend her on full pay if we need to - but I think it is quite reasonable to offer her more appropriate work. Is there anything we can do if she absolutely refuses.....
Any suggestions on how to proceed would be welcomed.

If she has reservations about dealing with members of the public she may find being forced to do so stressfull. Are there other admin/clerical options?

The shop is in fact an office with a counter and only has a limited amount of customers coming in every day - probably about 20 absolute maxiumum on a busy day. There are 3 other workers in the office/shop and I am looking for her to do some administration and some customer serving.
I take your point about stress but feel she just needs a bit of a confidnece boost as I'm sure she could do this type of role given a bit of training.

Stress can be a real issue for a pregant worker.
New and expectant mothers can be particularly vulnerable to occupational stressors, for various reasons:
Hormonal, physiological and psychological changes occur and sometimes change rapidly during and after pregnancy, sometimes affecting susceptibility to stress, or to anxiety or depression in individuals.
Additional stress may occur if a woman’s anxiety about her pregnancy, or about its outcome (eg where there is a past history of miscarriage, stillbirth or other abnormality) is heightened as a result of peer group or other pressure in the workplace. This can lead to increased vulnerability to other organisational stressors.
So I would tread very carefully if you plan to drastically changer her job role, espcially if she has already expressed an issue with it. Isnt there any admin roles within the warehouse she can pick up?

Could you start earlier, offering her a few hrs in the new position to start with, to try and build her confidence, some times it's the fear of the unknown rather than refusing. Then you could build on this.
