Dear All
While this forum brings some interesting and very informative questions and answers I feel that the "cutting & pasting" of articles found in the press does nothing for the reputation of the otherwise excellent forum.
IMHO all it brings is debate for the sake of debate and generally achieves nothing!
So my question for my learned friends is why is this practice allowed?

Seriously though Jane,
I used to partake in this activity, but what I tend to do nowadays is forward links to these articles to the IOSH press team so that they can choose whether to respond when they have researched the full story.

this is a discussion forum, open to all. If it is not libellous/distasteful in any way, what does it matter how a discussion begins? Pasting a link invites others to look at a matter which they otherwise may not have been aware. Those who choose to follow that link are not obliged to post any comment.
Surely it is the comments that cause your discomfort, not the links which are pasted.

I personally never condone such postings.... we all have the freedom of choice... at least a lot more than others!

My main issue with this is that all too often the posters that copy & paste, IMHO inane links, appear to have no opinion on the subject, the link just appears, therefore causing debate for the sake of debate!
I am not of one second suggesting people do not have the freedom of speech! or the right to join in the "discussion".
My question is why?? Why do people think this is a useful way to promote H&S??

I do not necessarily think that some who copy and paste have H&S promotion at the front or even the back of their minds all of the time. I think that it is simply that some headlines may cause discussion among those who wish to do so. I don't consider that I am promoting health and safety by posting this comment, for example. Just continuing the debate.

I am kinda with Jayne on this. I wouldn't want to stifle real debate on real health and safety issues, but the practice of copying in links for newspaper stories (and yes many were just that!) was becoming very tiresome and did little or nothing to encourage sensible debate. It seems to me that rather than creating real debate they were little more than a means for some to 'assassinate' the people or organisations portrayed within the stories, based on, ambiguous, biased and rather inaccurate reporting. One thread, had in my view the potential to cause real genuine distress to the people connected with the story and should have been stopped by the moderators.
