Hi All
Recently I was approached by a friend who wanted me to improve SHEQ standards for his father's company.
Picture this: A very small firm who conducts minor road works. A job could last a day to a couple of hours then onto the next job.
I enquired what the welfare arrangements were, to my dismay the lad said the ditch is the loo and the van is the canteen. I asked if they were happy to continue with this- the macho guy kicks in- well its either that or don't eat and wear incontinence pads! He is such a funny guy, ahem!!
I asked if he would like someone to be relieving themselves in his front garden, I won't even mention his response.
I spoke with my friend and explained that this was needed improved upon.
Now I try to be a voice of reason at all times, but my friend said they didn't have the money to give 3 or 4 squads (4/5 man bands) welfare facilities.
This is where I need your help- have any of your found a solution to a similar problem that kept costs to a minimum?

How new is the MD's car as that is [sometimes] a marker for how well they are doing!
Its again a 'whats reasonably practicable situation' noting that standards are expected to rise not go down so there is a way if people sit and appraise the situation
I would be surprised if they were doing highways works for an authority and they have not already charged for welfare in their prices!
doing jobs for friends is not always the best way to go

There is such a thing as mobile welfare facilities. On one occasion we hired a van with toilet, microwave, fridge etc. It might be worth purchasing one in the long-term.

I fully appreciate your sentiments about the old scenario of business/friendship/families, but I know the guy is getting it tight at the moment with the way the market is and he needed a favour to get accredited.
Methinks it will be one to learn from.
Ray
Would you contact me off the forum with details of the supplier to get an idea of costs.
Thanks
