Posted By Leon McManus Evening all, Wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of where to find info on the above. We have a fleet of HGV vehicles and for any local breakdowns we send out our workshop mechanics. I have arranged for marking of the service vehicle and the training of our technicians, just wondered about requirements of cones, signs and the layout of. We don't do anything on motorways but there is the possibility of dual carriageway and roads above 50mph. All info welcome. Many thanks, Leon

Posted By Jay Joshi PAS 43:2008 is about "Safe working of vehicle breakdown, recovery and removal operations", but it is a Management system specification and does not have the technical details of safe distances etc. The UKAS Document, link below has some useful pointers, even if you do not go for the certification:- http://www.ukas.com/libr...ion%201%20Dec%202003.pdf

Posted By Leon McManus Many thanks for all the help, I have PAS43 2008 on its way and also some info from HSE, although I was expecting to find more as this would seem to me to be a very hazardous task. I will see what PAS43 has to say as far as any form of guidance/industry standard. Once again thanks to everyone who took the time out to help. Leon

Posted By Malcolm Fryer Leon You have been given some good advice and I would like to add the following. There will be a new publication number HSG 261 which will be available early in November and for free download. This will be called Health & safety in motor vehicle repair and associated industries. It will include a specific section about roadside repairs and recovery at about page 30. It will be a superb publication for the MVR sector and I encourage you to look at it. I am involved in the industry and we very recently sent a technician out to a roadside repair and he followed the procedures perfectly and parked his vehicle in an appropriate manner. He also ensured that the vehicle driver stood a good distance away from the vehicle. Despite this another lorry driver collided with the technician's vehicle which then disintegrated. Part of the flying debris hit the driver of the broken down vehicle and caused his death. A very sobering occurrence to say the least. Malcolm

Posted By Leon McManus Hi Malcolm Just a quick thanks I will indeed look at HSG 261, we too lost a driver some years ago to a collision during a roadside repair, although our driver was the breakdown, the tyre fitter also lost his life. I am glad to see the intro of HSG. Thanks again, Leon
