I am trying to do some research into the number of accidents in the UK involving certain types of equipment at work. Does anyone have the faintest idea how I can find out a rough estimate for the number of forklift trucks, ladders and scaffold systems in use by companies in the UK? I don't know where to start.

Hi Graham,
The last time I remember such a question was at an IEE lecture given by one of HSE's inspectors.
A member of the audience made a similar request, & I think, the inspector advised that a certain amount of data may be available on their website, or failing that to make a freedom of information act request to HSE.
Was a long time ago mind!

Thanks Paul, I did get a reply from the FLTA who have estimated a minimum of 350,000 forklift trucks are in operation within the UK. I will try PASMA and the Ladder Association to see if they can add any estimates from their industry knowledge.
