Posted By Crim Just seen on BBC news China celebrating 60 years. There was a mention of the clouds being chased away by their weather changing technology. Does anyone know what that is about? I remember when Russia had the Olympics many years ago the weather was awful until just before the opening ceremony when all of a sudden it was sunny and that stayed right through the games. Something about cement powder dropped onto the rain clouds?

Posted By Ron Hunter Dry Ice or Silver Iodide perhaps as an effective method of "seeding" clouds. Cement? Don't think so. 60 years of Communism presumably?

Posted By gerry d I`m not sure of the technology but remember this being mentioned when the Beijing Olympics were held last year. Remember all that smog...where did that go? They definitely used something to `chase` it away just in time for the games starting.

Posted By Crim Whatever it is can we have some please? I'm fed up with our weather. You'd think that the government would invest in this sort of technology as it would boost our holiday trade and would lead to cost savings in the construction industry as projects could be carried out in dry and warm weather.

Posted By Leo26 Just recently read a book (fiction apparently) where on an international scale we attempted to manage the weather i.e. chasing rain clouds away, moving hurricanes away from landfall so we could all enjoy a better climate and the crops were watered at pre-planned times...I'm sure you get the picture. As you can imagine it didn't end well for the human race, the book was called "Extinction" and that wasn't referring to communism..... The climate has managed itself naturally for millions of years without our help, why should we be so arrogant to think we know better now in the short space of time that we have been around, doesn't every action have a reaction? If it's not broken don't try and fix, it will only end in tears. Leo26

Posted By Stuff4blokes Leo26, if your post is an argument that man-made global warming does not exist I have to disagree. There is too much evidence for me to believe otherwise. Also it is well-established that man's activities affect local weather: smogs in UK are now history as a result of reduced particulate air pollution. So far as I understand, Beijing banned the use of most cars and shut down industry before and during their Olympics thus removing the causes of their smog.

Posted By John Packer Stuff4blokes. You are correct in saying that they shut industry down to allow the smog to clear. Unfortunately what they actually did was flicked the switch, turned off the lights and went home for several weeks, on plant that had been running 24/7 for years. No points for guessing what happened when they came back and switched it back on...Nothing! In some cases it took 2 months after that before production resumed.

Posted By Leo26 Stuff4blokes, In total agreement with you, although some leading environmentalists would suggest Global Warming may not be the appropriate terminology more climate change, either way man has surely had an impact on this change. Reducing emmisions, pollution etc is exactly what we should be doing.........dropping cement, seeding clouds etc whatever they want to call it is not natural and should we be doing it? Leo26
