Posted By Barry Bruce Does anyone know the degree of movement a vertical trip switch/device on a radial drill is required to have in order to activate? We have been told by an HSE Inspector 10 degree from its normal position is the 'general rule' but she couldnt provide evidence of this. I know it has to be within 75mm and within 90 degrees rotation from operators positon but nothing on the degree of movement? Thanks

Posted By Peter Still Barry, I'm not aware of any specific requirement, only that it is 'suitable'. If there is anything specific it will probably be in either PM83 Drilling machines: guarding of spindles and attachments from HSE Books, ISBN 0717615464, or EN 12717 Safety of machines - drilling machines. Sorry I can't access either of those documents at the moment. Peter

Posted By Barry Bruce Thanks Peter - I have had a good look at a HSG 129: Health and Safety in Engineering Workshops details requirements of this type of device but doesnt specify degree of movement. If the trip device is CE marked it must be the relevant BS standards and therefore should be of a suitable design for use.
